McDavid's roots can be traced back to 1969 when Dr. Robert F. McDavid designed and developed what was to become the first widely used lateral protective knee brace in football.

McDavid has come far from the beginnings in 1969. From a basement in Bellwood, IL, to our production facility and global headquarters in Woodridge, IL, McDavid now manufactures and market over 400 different innovative products for athletes and active people of all ages. McDavid, the world’s leading manufacturer of sports medical products, protective padding and protective athletic wear, continues to innovate the sports medical category with the introduction of three new products. The 189 Ankle X™, the Multi-Action Knee Strap and the Achilles Tendon Strap are all designed to provide maximum protection against sprains and other injuries, while delivering optimum comfort, fit and mobility.

2003
McDavid’s innovative HexPad ™ Technology is introduced to the marketplace. This revolutionary technology has defined a new category--Protective Apparel to protect athletes and enhance performance. As the leader in technology and innovation, protecting the world's best athletes and championship teams, over 90% of professional basketball players and 50% of professional football teams wear McDavid HexPad™ everyday. Collegiate and High School athletes are ordering, adopting and wearing HexPad™ products at an amazing pace, while athletes in Action Sports and Winter Sports are also fast discovering its features and benefits.

1999
In 1999 the McDavid IMPACT ZONE retail merchandising system was introduced to make it easier for consumers to shop for sports medical products. It organizes products into three distinct protection levels and provides consumer education at the store level. In 1999 we also introduced McDavid Body Shirts - snug fitting compression under shirts that stay dry and light during intense competition unlike the traditional cotton garments that become wet and heavy.

1998
In 1998 our Guardian Ankle Brace was introduced-a hinged ankle splint that is easier to apply and remove for injury prevention and treatment.

1996
The #428 Pro Stabilizer was introduced in 1996, making a more technically advanced knee brace available to the consumer.

1994
1994 marked the introduction of a complete line of McDavid hDc products. These technically advanced performance garments feature the same McDavid hDc fabric found in our compression line. Products include T-shirts, tights, shorts, hoods, and referee clothing.

1992
In 1992 McDavid compression shorts and supporters were introduced. These products offer our hDc fabric, which is revolutionary in the way it manages perspiration by increasing evaporation rates. This makes the garments cooler and drier for greater comfort and better performance.

1989
In 1989, after three years of development, the McDavid Cowboy Collar™ was introduced. This product defined a new level of neck protection in football and has since become the standard for stinger or burner prevention. Today, it is worn by virtually all collegiate and professional football teams.

1985
By 1985 10 new products were introduced including our A101 Ankle Guard and the first clamshell packaging for retail. McDavid ankle braces have since become the standard for ankle protection leading the move away from taping to the equally effective and less costly use of bracing for injury prevention. Every year since has seen the introduction of an average of 15 new products.

1980
In 1980, after 11 years of grass roots development at the collegiate and professional sports medicine levels, McDavid Knee Guard, Inc. was formed to market protective braces and began operating from a basement in Bellwood, IL. The goal then, as it is today, was to develop innovative products and technologies to help prevent injury and to enhance performance of athletes and active people of all ages.
